Europe’s Capital of Entertainment and Shopping
Stroll the picturesque promenade along the blue Lake Zürich. Step into the friendly workshops and boutiques in the Old Town. Visit the old Town Hall from the 17th century and the church of St. Peter – the oldest church in the city, adorned with the largest church clock face in Europe, with a diameter of 8.7 meters. Then explore the famous churches of Grossmünster and Fraumünster. The latter has beautiful stained-glass windows designed by the famous painter Marc Chagall. Take a boat ride along the Limmat River to see the picturesque buildings on both banks, and then climb the Lindenhof hill and look at the city from the viewing terrace.
In the city, which is famous for world-class opera and ballet, as well as classical concerts, there are more than 50 museums and 100 galleries. The Museum of Art (Kunsthaus Zürich) houses the largest modern art collection in Zürich, with works by Giacometti, Picasso, Monet, and Chagall. The Foundation E.G. Bührle Collection displays the works of Monet, Cézanne, and Renoir. Masters of contemporary art await you at the art exhibition centre Kunsthalle Zürich, while one of Europe’s best collections of Asian art is on display at the Rietberg Museum.
Zürich is not the capital of Switzerland, but it is undoubtedly its capital of entertainment. Once a quiet, reserved financial centre of Switzerland, it is becoming more and more vibrant with every new day.
Zürich has more than 500 clubs and bars where the party lasts until the morning hours. Join the fun-loving youth in the Zürich-West area. Once an industrial district, it now dictates the rhythm of the city’s entertainment with trendy bars and clubs. Every year, Zürich also hosts Europe's largest outdoor techno and rave parade – the Street Parade. If you are eager to shop, then walk through one of the most exclusive shopping streets in the world – Bahnhofstrasse, where you can find anything, from department stores and boutiques to watch shops and chocolate shops. Be sure to try delicious potato fries – rösti, cheese fondue, and sinfully good chocolate pralines.
