The capital of Russia is one of the largest, most cosmopolitan and liveliest European cities. Moscow is full of sights reminiscent of its imperialist and Soviet-era history, on the other hand, however, it has no shortage of modern clubs, bars and shopping malls. The heart of Russia
A visit to Moscow usually begins at the famous Red Square with its colourful multi-towered Cathedral of St. Basil dating back to the 16th century and the city’s instantly recognizable symbol. The square has witnessed major historical events and, in addition to many buildings from the Russian past, is also home to Lenin's mausoleum. The red Kremlin walls surround the city’s most famous churches and historical monuments with the giant 15th-century fortress itself containing five palaces, four cathedrals and the famous Armory, which, in addition to weapons, houses an impressive collection of gemstones.
Rich collections beckon from Moscow’s numerous museums and galleries, such as the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, which houses the works of the world's greatest masters with a major collection of impressionist paintings. The Tretyakov Gallery meanwhile contains the largest collection of Russian art, with the country’s famous icons at the fore. Enjoy a moment of peace and quiet by taking a stroll through the Novodevichy Cemetery, the final resting place of many famous Russian politicians and artists such as Anton Chekhov, Nikolai Gogol, Nikita Khrushchev and Boris Yeltsin.
Moscow is the most beautiful in the spring, but white Russian winters also have their charm. Go and see for yourselves.
With more than 100 parks and countless gardens, Moscow is one of the greenest capitals in the world. Although it may not seem like the most obvious destination for a family trip at first glance, the city houses many children’s theatres, circuses and amusement parks, with the most popular of being the always lively Gorky Park on the Moskva River’s bank. Another major tourist attraction is the Arbat promenade in the old part of town, where many famous artists have found their home. The promenade houses, among other things, the famous blue house, a museum that for a time used to be the dwelling of poet Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin and his wife.
