A Relaxed Modern City

Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, is an elegant city, situated at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain. As in many Eastern European cities, also in Sofia visitors can enjoy a mix of architectural styles, from Ottoman mosques to the orthodox churches with round domes, as well as communist era blocks. During the construction of the metro, the excavation works unveiled the Roman ruins dating back almost two thousand years, when the city was called Serdika. You can see the ruins of the streets, houses, basilica and thermal baths at a partially covered site. 

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is among the most important and attractive buildings in the city. All history lovers, be sure to see the National History Museum, while to see the contemporary history, check out the Museum of Socialist Art. Sofia can offer a lot to its visitors, it is home to the best Bulgarian museums, galleries, restaurants and clubs, all offer great experience at modest prices. Bulgaria is famous for it roses, therefore it is fitting you conclude your visit by purchasing some cosmetic products and gifts of rose essential oil that can be found throughout the city.

The mountain chain Vitosha at the outskirts of Sofia boasts peaks that are more than 2000 above sea level and thus offers great opportunities for hiking, climbing, mountain biking and other winter sports. Popular hiking destinations are the Boyana waterfall and Kopitoto, the TV tower, built in the communist era that offers a magnificent view of the city. At the foot of the Vitosha Mountain there is the Boyana church, built in the 10th century, part of the UNESCO cultural heritage sites. Sofia is also a very green capital, where you can enjoy numerous parks and well-tended gardens. Perhaps the most beautiful among them, in the very centre of the city, is the park of Borisova Gradina.
