A modern city with tradition
For a first impression of the city, walk across its Eiserner Steg iron bridge, see the beautiful Cathedral of St. Bartholomew from the 14th century and stop at the picturesque Römerberg Square in front of the 15th-century town hall. Don’t skip on one of the city’s many world-famous museums, and then relax in the beautiful Grüneburg Park, treat yourself to a coffee and cake in one of the cafés, or buy a famous frankfurter right on the street. Don't forget to try the local specialty - cider - either. Then see the city from a bird's eye view - the Main Tower, a 200-metre-high skyscraper beside the River Main offers an unforgettable view.
Messe Frankfurt is one of the largest exhibition spaces in the world, hosting the famous Frankfurt Book Fair, the world's largest literary event, with a tradition dating back to 1485. The Frankfurt Motor Show, the world’s largest automobile show, was also held at the Messe for many years. Frankfurt offers opportunities for great purchases, with the central Zeil promenade as the city’s most visited shopping destination. Don’t miss the opportunity to enter the street’s impressive MyZeil shopping centre, before wandering on to Goethestrasse to visit boutiques of renowned fashion designers. If antiques are closer to your heart, don't miss a visit to Saturday's flea market by the river.
Frankfurt is a city of contrasts, where the tallest and the most modern skyscrapers flirt with old, romantic buildings.
Should architecture, art and history be more to your liking, visit the Museumsufer, the area where you will find most of Frankfurt’s museums. You can choose between the Architecture Museum, the Film Museum, the Communications Museum and various art museums. Globally renowned names of modern art are exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, while the Städel Museum features works by Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne and Matisse, among others.
